Cookie Policy
emwing.com sets no cookies. The Emwing app uses one strictly necessary cookie to keep you signed in. No advertising, analytics or social cookies, anywhere.
The short version
This Cookie Policy explains how Emwing GmbH, Torstraße 140, 10119 Berlin, Germany (“Emwing”, “we” or “us”) uses cookies and similar technologies on emwing.com and in the Emwing web app and apps (together, the “Service”). It should be read together with our Privacy Policy.
We use only technologies that are strictly necessary to provide the Service you ask for. We do not use advertising, analytics, social media or tracking cookies, and we do not allow any third party to set them through the Service.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser. Similar technologies include local storage and IndexedDB, which let a web app keep data on your device. Under section 25 of the German Telecommunications and Digital Services Data Protection Act (TDDDG) and the ePrivacy Directive, storing or accessing information on your device requires your consent, unless it is strictly necessary to provide a service you have explicitly requested.
The website
Our public website, emwing.com, including the pricing page, help centre and legal pages, does not set any cookies and does not use local storage to identify or track you. Fonts and scripts are served from our own servers, so no third party learns that you visited.
The only exception is a small preference, such as a remembered help-centre search, which your browser may keep for the current tab only and which never leaves your device.
The one cookie we use
When you sign in to the Emwing web app, we set one first-party cookie named ew_session. It contains a random session identifier that lets our servers recognise that you are signed in. It is marked Secure, HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax, so it is only sent over encrypted connections, cannot be read by scripts and is not sent to other websites.
By default, ew_session is a session cookie and is deleted when you close your browser. If you choose “Stay signed in”, it lasts for up to 30 days and is renewed each time you use Emwing. It is deleted immediately when you sign out.
This cookie is strictly necessary for the Service you have asked for, and is therefore permitted without consent under section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG.
Local storage and your mail cache
The web app uses IndexedDB and local storage to keep the encrypted local cache of your mailbox, the queue of messages waiting to be sent in offline mode, and your preferences, such as your shortcut layout. This data stays on your device and is used only to run Emwing for you.
These technologies are strictly necessary to provide the instant search and offline features that you use when you open Emwing, and are therefore permitted without consent under section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG. The cache is encrypted with a key tied to your device and account.
What we don’t use
We do not use advertising or retargeting cookies, analytics cookies, social media plugins, fingerprinting techniques or third-party cookie technologies of any kind. Because we use only strictly necessary technologies, we do not show a cookie consent banner: there is nothing to consent to.
Emwing also protects you from tracking by others: tracking pixels embedded in incoming emails are blocked before a message opens.
Your choices
You can delete the ew_session cookie and Emwing’s local storage at any time through your browser settings, usually under Privacy or Site data, by signing out, or by clearing the local cache in Settings → Devices. Most browsers also let you block cookies altogether.
If you block or delete the ew_session cookie, you will need to sign in again, and the web app will not work while cookies are blocked. If you clear local storage, your mail cache will be rebuilt the next time you sign in; any messages still waiting in the offline queue will be lost, so make sure you are online first.
Changes and contact
If we change the cookies or similar technologies we use, we will update this policy and the date at the top. We will never introduce non-essential cookies without first asking for your consent.
